Built by School District 23 as a renovation to an annex building at George Elliot Secondary School, this facility will provide Out Of School Care as well as daycare for infants and toddlers. The consultant team was challenged to covert an existing annex composed of aging modular buildings into a modern, functional, and durable structure with access to outdoors and plenty of natural lighting.
The mechanical systems were selected for energy efficiency as well as durability and serviceability with a lifecycle centered design methodology. Primary heat will be provided by a condensing boiler designed to operate with low heating water temperatures. Electronic pressure independent control valves will control the flow of heating water to each fan coil unit, which will provide temperature control to each zone. The fan coil ECM fan airflow will vary based on the heating, cooling, and ventilation loads. Direct Expansion cooling will be provided by condensing units connected to each fan coil unit. Low level return air grilles will provide improved air change effectiveness, while preventing the comfort and energy efficiency issues associated with warm air stratifying near the ceiling. Ventilation will be provided by a heat recovery ventilator, with demand-control ventilation based on occupancy and CO2 sensors.
LED lights with advanced lighting controls will round out the energy conservation efforts in this building.
