Summerwood Retirement Residence

Kelowna, British Columbia

In late 2017, Falcon Engineering Ltd. was engaged to provide mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services for this new construction senior’s residential project in Kelowna, BC. This facility is one of several private retirement residences located in the Okanagan Region that are managed by the same owner/operator group.

Summerwood is comprised of 3 linked buildings arranged around a central entrance area. Building A has a total area of 8,121 m2 over 4 floors. Building B has a total area of 6,421 m2 over 5 floors. Building C has a total area of 3,067 m2 over 5 floors. The overall suite count is 154 with a total resident capacity of 193 seniors.

The project features a number of programmed spaces that reflect the active status of residents, including a large production kitchen that serves a communal dining room on the main level.

The Falcon mechanical and electrical team worked closely with the entire consultant team to achieve an efficient high quality overall building services design. The kitchen layout was closely coordinated by the Falcon team with the work of a commercial kitchen consultant.

The HVAC system serving this building included a distributed water source heat pump system as well as air source heat pump PTAC units in each suite. A central ventilation system was provided to reduce maintenance requirements. Domestic hot water is also centralized using high-efficiency gas-fired hot water tanks. Electrical systems were designed to optimize the living experience with a focus on the amenity spaces in terms of both lighting and equipment connections. In keeping with Falcon’s expertise in contemporary lighting design, the Summerwood lighting was designed to provide a warm residential experience and home like environment for staff and residents.
